Election Official Education

The electoral process is affected by the use of electronic voting machines.  EVMS provides education about the physical aspects of the voting machine.  The use of education to instruct voters and election officials about how to operate the machine in the context of the election is an essential aspect of the services provided.

The EVMS representatives train the election officials for election day.  The representatives teach the election officials the basic procedures necessary to use the machines in an election.  They set up voter training programs that teach voters how to use the system.

The basic steps in opening and closing the machines are simple.  The training is divided into three segments: an introduction in which the overall process will be explained, a careful demonstration of the machine, and a preview and summary.

A voting machine is a specialized adding machine.  The vote selections made by each voter are stored as a separate ballot after the "cast votes" button has been pushed.  After the polls close, election officials can press the "Add Votes" button to get a total number of votes, which are also divided into separate voting categories.  A "Print" button can be pushed to print the ballot result totals, and each ballot can be printed individually.

The duties of election officials on election day have to do with printing the ballot, opening and closing the machine to install the ballot, assembling, testing, and initializing machines before voting hours, admitting each voter to the machine during voting hours, educating the voters in the operation of the machines, assisting visually impaired voters, and printing vote category totals or individual ballots.
