Voting Machine Setup

The first step is to remove the selection mechanism, Palm device, and printer from the box of election supplies.

Each selection voting machine mechanism has a unique number that is also printed on the ballot and displayed on the machine.  Compare the machine serial number printed on the ballot to the number stamped on the machine.

Put one voting machine in each booth and attach the serial cable from each machine into the serial port.  There is a USB and serial port for each machine.  The Linux hub controller has ports labeled with numbers and colors to accept connectors from the selection mechanism.  Cables are color coded to reflect particular machines and numbered to reflect the box into which they must be inserted.  There are blue cable connectors 1, 2, 3, 4 and red cable connectors 1, 2, 3, 4.  There are yellow cable connectors 1, 2, 3, 4 and green cable connectors 1, 2, 3, 4 and so forth for as many voting machines as are in a precinct.

Connect the power cable from each machine into the universal battery powered supply, which serves as a reserve power supply.  Power up the Linux computer and then power up each connected voting machine.  Observe the lights, as they will illuminate in succession to indicate power is being received.

Connect the headset and handheld selection console for the visually impaired to the hub using a color-coded connector system.  The Palm device is located on the side of the selection mechanism.  Look at the protective counter number and compare it to the key envelope.
